Witnes: Herpes Virus Infection Make Fiona's Face Paralyzed

Fiona Hawthorne fully understand that the face is the windows to the soul. This is because he knows how it feels to experience paralysis in the face during the night due to a virus.

About 2 years ago, Fiona is married to actor Colin Salmon severed a Bell's Palsy, which is weakening or paralysis of the facial muscles caused by a virus attack.
Fiona's disease ocured after 10 days after he had minor surgery on a hole in the ear drum. When he was just doing surgery and the next night he could not sleep because of the tremendous pain.
"By mid-afternoon I noticed one side of the face began to decline, I could not lift the left side of the mouth, can not smile and left eye open," Fiona said, as quoted by the Daily Mail, Friday (11/30/2012).
Fearing he had a stroke, Fiona went straight to the doctor and after 48 hours of symptoms starting, the doctor said there was likely to experience swelling and trauma of the surgery. But when the doctor said he would be fine in a few days.
But in fact, the next day the symptoms become worse and the left side of his face can not be moved at all, until he realized sleep in one eye open positions.
Fiona immediately went to Charing Cross Hospital in London where he underwent surgery and a specialist diagnosed with Bell's Palsy condition. This condition is caused by a herpes virus infection or varicella zoster virus living in the nerve and is active when the immune system is being weakened.
This virus triggers inflammation in the facial nerve causing compression occurs which in turn makes the muscles become paralyzed and face so limp.
Symptoms that arise include severe pain, loss of the ability to taste or sensation on the tongue, difficulty in eating and talking. These symptoms develop quickly and culminating after 72 hours. Medications such as steroids and anti-viral drugs will respond best if done immediately to reduce inflammation.
Doctors said 75 percent of patients will recover fully in 2-3 months after being diagnosed and treated quickly to reduce the likelihood of long-term neurological damage.
Fiona finally recovered after treatment for 2 months and was able to avoid surgery. Then he was referred to a specialist unit to train facial palsy and facial muscles after paralysis.
"I emphasize the importance of this treatment for me, because it can make me feel normal again. Now I can stand next to Colin with a smile," said Fiona.
