Herpes is a sexually transmitted disease that can affect both men and women. But the vaccine is believed to prevent herpes failed to protect women from the disease.
The researchers report a promising vaccine against herpes viruses showed failures in large clinical trials. Known efficacy (potency) of the vaccine against herpes by 20 percent only. These results are reported in the New England Journal of Medicine.
"We were really disappointed with the results obtained from clinical trials on a large scale," said study co-author Dr. Peter Leone of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as quoted from ABCNews, on Thursday (01/05/2012).
In a large study conducted by mimicking the general population of women who are infected show potent vaccine against herpes simplex-1 (HSV-1), but not for herpes simplex-2 (HSV-2).
HSV-2 is generally considered more worrisome because they tend to have a higher recurrence rate than HSV-1, and is also associated with an increased risk of contracting HIV.
Leone said investigators need to approach different types of vaccines, so it will be able to find a new vaccine that could work for both types of potent virus.
In this study, researchers recruited 8323 women aged 18-30 tahn who do not have antibodies against the virus. The results of the analysis of the study showed the vaccine had a 58 percent efficacy against HSV-1, but did not have the effect of HSV-2. Overall, the vaccine could protect infection by 22 percent.
"The vaccine has a strong antibody response against HSV-2, but these antibodies may have a protective effect of blunt cellular immune response," said Leone.
