A recent research indicated that children with asthma have a higher risk of herpes zoster - a type of skin rash that hurts. Herpes zoster is a disease caused by Varicella zoster, the virus that also causes chickenpox (varicella).
The data in the United States shows, at least one million people infected with herpes zoster every year. However, this disease primarily affects men and women aged over 60 years or those with weak immune.
In a study, researchers analyzed the medical records involving 277 patients aged under 18 years who have had chickenpox between the period of 1996-2001. Of the total 277 children with no history of smallpox, the researchers found that children with asthma have a 2.2 times greater risk of suffering from chickenpox than those who do not suffer from asthma. While 23 percent of shingles patients had a history of asthma before the onset of herpes zoster and 35 patients without herpes zoster (about 12.5 percent) had asthma in the past.
The findings are scheduled to be presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology in Orlando, Florida.
"Previously not known whether asthma status pose an increased risk of herpes zoster in children," said study author Dr. Young Juhn, Mayo Clinic pediatrician from Children's Center in Rochester, Minnesotta, USA.
"These results suggest that asthma significantly increased risk of herpes zoster in children," he explained.
In previous research, the researchers found that microbial infection in adult asthma sufferers from respiratory-related conditions such as strep throat, cough and pneumococcal disease are serious. "However, shingles is not a respiratory disease, and a good immune defense mechanism in preventing the development of primary herpes zoster," said Juhn.
